Crafstman Bath Remodel

This bathroom is within a beautiful Sears Roebuck Craftsman Style bungalow (yes, this house was ordered from a catalog). The tile is custom made and the millwork is designed to fit with the other woodwork in the house. With Joe Metzlar.

Wisconsin Cabin

Prairie Style Entry

The Prairie Style is noted for the circuitous and dramatic entry path into a residence. This sequence of steps and planters brings guests to a prominent new terrace overlooking Lake of the Isles as they enter this historic Prairie Style home.

Design Process

I like to provide a homeowner with a series of alternatives when they are seeking a remodeling, addition, or new home. This family was looking for a way to update their kitchen and stylistically integrate it better into their house. I began by meeting with them to discuss the problems that they saw with their present kitchen and how it fit with the living and dining rooms. After taking all of the important measurements and photos, I drew an accurate plan of that part of the existing house and created four alternatives that explored very different styles and floor plans. The cost to do these drawings was about $1500.

High Style Prairie Split Level Conversion

These home owners loved the work of Purcell & Elmslie, the Greene brothers, and Wright but owned a sixties split level on lake Minnetonka that had been insensitively remodeled. This conversion brings the style, finely detailed materials, and easy flowing spaces of the Prairie Style of a century ago to this home on Lake Minnetonka.

Lake of the Isles Addition

The way that a family inhabits a home has changed since this house was built a century ago on Lake of the Isles. Even large beautifully finished houses didn’t have family rooms extending the kitchen. This addition gives a family with young children a new Kitchen/Family Room with an intimate connection to their beautiful garden. Below is a new exercise room and a guest room above.

The 1859 Brings House

The historic Brings House was built of stone in 1859 and had a wood addition applied to it after it was moved to its present site on the river bluff. But the kitchen remained dark, separate, and almost windowless. This light filled, dine-in kitchen addition was awarded the St. Paul Preservation Award and allows access to the new orchard with views of the river valley.
